The Sicilian Defence 1.e4 c5, is currently the most popular of all chess openings, perhaps because it allows black to unbalance the position and play for a win from the very first move. its many variations range from the relatively solid Classical Variation to the out-and-out tactics of the Poisoned Pawn. The volume of Sicilian theory is truly staggering, and for this reason many white players try to steer the game into channels of their own choosing by avoiding the Open Sicilian, with lines such as the Morra Gambit and the Closed Sicilian.
If a player has a serious amount of spare time, he could chose for the real meat of Sicilian Theory by studying lines as the Najdorf and the Dragon. Not only do these lines include many complicated tactical tricks, they also feature many important strategical themes. In order not to lose the game in the opening, these also have to be studied carefully.
